Spiritual - Music through time

Hello everyone, we are learning about the slaves since 16th centuries ago. We are looking at the music and how they have to be traded in America. The slaves would make music to lift their selves and give them hope that they could escape. Our task is to find spirituals and the hidden message behind it.

The spirituals are a type of religious songs. They were sung in informal gatherings of slaves in praises house and bush meetings. The spirituals are used to give them hope, communicate, uplift their selves, and relay in the hidden message so they can escape.

Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman - Harriet Tubman is an ex-slave that helps the slaves to escape their owners. Harriet Tubman uses music to communicate with others and help them to escape. She created an underground railroad which is an idea of how they can escape their owners.

The spiritual music that I choose was...'Sweet Chariot'

Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home.

I looked over Jordan and what did I see
Coming for to carry me home
A band of angels coming after me,
Coming for to carry me home.

I you get there before I do,
Coming for to carry me home
Tell all my friends that I’m coming, too,
Coming for to carry me home.

Why did I choose this song? well, the song is really catchy and the lyrics are really nice. The song meaning is if the slave heard this song it's letting them know that a band of angels are coming to them and give them freedom. the meaning is 'the underground railroad (sweet chariot) is coming south (swing low)  to take the slaves to the north or freedom (carry me home)

How are these events still significant today? Well, this still affects till now because of how people not making this serious that it turns into fights. Like now, there is a  protest about the Black live matter.

Here is the song:  "Sweet chariot"

Here is the map I made for the slave trade triangle.
