Workshop 2 - Linking themes to the impact of angles, movement and shots.

Brainstorms
What's happening - Other Wybie standing on stairs outside the house. Other Mothers ask him to smile from the doorway, instead he forward. Other Wybie making self smaller - less of a target - head down shoulders hunched. Looks weak and vulnerable.

  • Angles/shot - high angle -make Wybie look overpowered, weak and vulnerable.
  • POV- Other Mother makes her seems stronger, bigger, more dominant.
  • Viewer - makes the viewer feel sorry for/ scared for the Other Wybie.

(Foreshadowing - hinting at what is to come)
  • Director - Hinting that maybe the Other Mother isn´t so wonderful.
  • Other Techniques - Lighting - spotlight on Wybie - like he's on the spot/ under focus - Dark around creates a creepy atmosphere.

 SEXXXY Paragraph
In the scene with the Other Mother and the Other Wybie, we see high angle shots used to show the theme ¨looks can be deciving¨. We see this when the Other Mother asks the Other Wybie to smile but he hunches over and frowns instead. This makes the audience feel sorry for Other Wybie because he looks scared. The use of the high angle shot from the perspective of the Other Mother adds to these feeling as it makes the Other Wybie look weak and vulnerable. The director did this to foreshadowing the change of the Other Mother from creepy to more creepy. Coinciding with this is the use of lighting. A spotlight is on the Other Wybie emphasising he is under the focus of the Other Mother. This reminds us of earlier in the film where a low angle shot was used to make Wybie seem big and scary but really was just ordinary. This links to the scene because it also shows a moment when the look of a character was deceiving.

Brainstorm
What's happening - The doll is spying on Coraline so that the doll can report it to the Other mother - making the doll look/spying at Coraline.

Angles/shots used - Dutch tilt - makes the doll looking/ spying at Coraline
How does the viewer feel -  makes the viewer that something is gonna happen - POV of the doll - someone is watching Coraline - Making you scared.
Why did the director do this -  To try to think that someone is looking/ spying at Coraline and makes it creepier - to know who is the next victim - someone is planning something.
additional info- music/light colour -  The music is quite scary/ creepy - the lighting is a bit dark - make it a bit creepy- telling you that Coraline is the victim.

In the scene where the doll is looking at Coraline and we can see that this is angle is a dutch tilt, We see this when we someone is watching you or unease feeling of the character. This makes the audience feel like someone is watching Coraline and we feel someones is stalking her. The director did this to make the audience feel that someone is watching her and have chills that there is something gonna happen bad. This worked well because we all know that the Other Mother did this because she wants Coraline soul. This reminds me in a horror movie when there cracking their necks.
